Now more than ever Feminist activism seems necessary. Gender equality milestones are overturned and there is this growing aggression towards whoever is challenging the white, male, heteronormative status quo. The right to abortion is still questioned and in many countries even criminalized and stripped away from persons with a womb. Period taboo remains largely unchallenged, making 52% of the world population suffer in silence every cycle. The medical industry researches and serves cis, male bodies primarily, creating a medical knowledge gap and safety hazards for other bodies. Also, the many different ways people experience gender inequality and discrimination are largely overlooked. And the list goes on…..
There is so much going on, so where to begin? Instead of feeling frustrated and powerless, we want to focus on the small ways in which we can express our activism. Wearing everyday apparel can be a statement and empower people to voice their opinions and that is how The Ovaries was born.
The Ovaries is committed to take action against gender inequality, with an intersectional approach. We aim to question the deeply rooted sexism and restrictive notion of gender, to encourage everyday activism and use our designs as a conversation starter. Although we feel that humor is a powerful tool to spark conversations, we take our activism very seriously and are always looking for the best ways to make an impact!
